It's January 18th, 2022. There are seemingly a million things to do! My guess is that your "to-do list" continues to expand. That is certainly the case for me. Yet, for the glory of God, and the good of Willow Creek Church, I'm going to focus on 3 things that I have been called to do (because as many have seen, I like to make lists of 3 primary things.)

Mission and goal setting, comes directly from Jesus. (I'm not saying that if you fail to set goals or lay out a personal mission that you aren't following Jesus.) But Jesus himself, clearly made his personal mission public. John 6:38- For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.

John 18:37- Pilate said to Him, “So You are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say correctly that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.”

Luke 4:43- But He said to them, “I must preach the kingdom of God to the other cities also, for I was sent for this purpose.”

Jesus made it abundantly clear that his mission was to point people to God through his clear communication of who God is in his words and actions. Ultimately, he pointed people to God through himself, as he was indeed fully God and fully man, Lord & King of all.

My personal aims in 2022 are much lower. I, like you, am equally dependent on my need to live for and worship Jesus as my Lord and King. In that recognition, I desire to see others live for and worship King Jesus in these 3 ways:

1. Connect: Pastor Greg recently shared with our staff that many view Christianity through the lens of needing to first "behave" (clean yourself up in order to walk into church) then "believe" in what is being shared, then you'll finally "belong." This is NOT the Gospel! Over and over again, the reality of the Gospel is that we are first called to recognize that we "belong" then we "believe" and only after being connected and a part of God's family, do we joyfully live to "behave."

My hope in 2022, is to see individuals and families come to WCC and truly feel as if they belong. First impressions, answering questions, follow-up conversations, corporate worship, Discover new members class, Wednesdays@Willow, church-wide events, small groups, intentionally praying together. These are just a few of the ways that we at WCC desire to see people find commuinty in order to "discover" that they do indeed belong and matter.

2. Care: This past year has been incredibly challenging with Covid not only affecting many people, but also effecting the way in which we are able to care for those in our midst. With the assistance of Heidi Bolt, Sam Martorana, Gino Parisi, Sarita & Rob Forbes, Mike Haas, and COUNTLESS others, my goal is to see our church really come alongside its own. This includes meal distribution, 1 on 1 conversations, distribution of our deacons fund offering, much prayer, sitting with those who are hurting, and celebrating with those who are filled with joy.

My goal for 2022 is to see MANY in our church personally commit their time, talent, and treasure to "mourn with those who mourn" and point others to the God who provides "peace that surpasses all understanding."

3. Community: Location, Location, Location. Willow Creek Church is located right at the intersection of Casselberry & Winter Springs. As I look out my office window, I see cars driving to and from both of these fine cities. As such, it is my goal to see the people of Willow Creek Church look outward and see these 2 communities as our mission field. When asked, "Who is my neighbor?" Jesus responds with the parable of the Good Samaritan. Basically, Jesus shares that you and I are called to love those in our immediate presence. Not those who ONLY look like us, vote like us, drive cars like us, live in neighborhoods like us, participate in the same activities as us, cheer for the same teams as us, etc...

My goal for 2022 is to regularly connect individuals with opportunities to "serve their neighbors." Perhaps it's with yard work, mentoring children, bringing a meal, serving with Christian Help, the Sharing Center, Choices Women's Clinic, helping someone pack to move homes... I desire to see us "love others as we have been so greatly loved by Jesus."

So there you have it. Pastor Drew's primary focus and goals for 2022. Connections, Care, Community. Come be a part. God's got big things ahead for you, and for Willow Creek Church. To God be the glory!

We exist to glorify God by declaring and demonstrating the power of the gospel of Jesus, inviting people to discover and deepen their relationship with Jesus.

Willow Creek Church Children's Worship Philosophy https://www.willowcreekchurch.org/drew-taylors-blog/post/childrens-worship-philosophy https://www.willowcreekchurch.org/drew-taylors-blog/post/childrens-worship-philosophy#comments Thu, 30 Sep 2021 10:00:00 -0400 https://www.willowcreekchurch.org/drew-taylors-blog/post/childrens-worship-philosophy Children's Worship

It is very common for human beings to follow along with what many have done previously. To not necessarily put much thought into the "why" they choose to take on a particular task. In the case of nursery, pre-school, and children's worship at Willow Creek Church, this is NOT the case.

Our goal as a church, is to see children hear the good news of what Jesus accomplished for them, believe that good news in their hearts, and commit themselves to be life-long worshipers of Jesus.

Deuteronomy 6:4-9 is one of the principal scriptures that speaks to the importance of teaching our faith to the next generation. This text is written to the whole of the community, and in this, the whole community (from the youngest to the oldest) are given the same reminders... The Lord is God, He is one. Love God with all your heart, soul, and might. Keep these commandments on your heart. Teach them diligently to your children. Talk about the commandments of the Lord in the house, when you walk amongst the community, when you lie down, and when you rise. Memorize (or bind) them as a sign on your hand. Write them down on your doorposts.

All of these words indicate that raising children to be worshipers of God is accomplished in a variety of fashions. We see children being raised as worshipers through 1. Parents 2. Public teaching 3. Public participation 4. Through memorization and work.

At Willow Creek Church, our philosophy is for our youngest attenders (nursery and pre-school age) to learn the "basic" or "core" Biblical stories that point children to Jesus. Story time, crafts, songs, prayer, various elements that are age-appropriate and help children learn how to sit, engage, and discover the basic tenants of our faith.

For elementary-age children, the "bar" is raised, in that we desire these children to visibly witness their parents/grandparents/church family members in worship. We want them to learn that worship is for life, and that they aren't merely whisked away because they are an annoyance or need to be entertained. So then, children pray corporately, confess their sin, hear the assurance of pardon, and sing songs of praise to God. Then, prior to the sermon, they go and enjoy a special teaching time with caring children's ministry team members.

By middle school, our hope is that students will begin to further engage in critical thought, they'll take notes, ask questions, discuss with their parents what the overall theme of the worship service is for that Sunday, and be able to sit the entire 75 minutes of service.

We don't do all of these things perfectly, but we do them intentionally. Thank you for your love, care, and support for our children's ministries. God bless you!

Cheryl came to Florida from Michigan as a young girl living first in the Miami area (Fins up!), then moving to Naples and eventually settling in Orlando.  A graduate of UCF with a degree in finance, she is presently working part time as the church bookkeeper.  Cheryl and her husband, Tony, have two grown children and three grandchildren, with a fourth one on the way.

Baptized back in the storefront, Cheryl found her savior and church family at Willow Creek.  Over the past 32 years she has enjoyed working and volunteering in various ministry areas which included the nursery, children and youth, adult ministries, WCHE, Awana and the Care Team.  It has been so rewarding to work with such a group of sincere and compassionate individuals that comprise the Care Team whose focus is on helping those in need here at Willow Creek as well as in the surrounding community.  God has shown His grace and mercy in so many circumstances that it has been such a source of growth and strength for Cheryl.  Humbled by the generosity she has witnessed in the many years she has served on the Care Team, Cheryl is thankful that she is able to serve in some small way, helping those, like herself, who are in need of such a loving and awesome God.

Andy & Nancy Pearson are the epitome of servant leaders. Willow Creek Church has been unbelievably blessed by their years of faithful service in a variety of capacities, and if you were to ask them, they would tell you that all glory goes to God.

The Pearson's have been attending WCC for many years! Andy is the son of beloved members, Bill & Marcia Pearson. His sister Heidi Bolt and her family also attend WCC along with visits from various other siblings, cousins, nephews, nieces, and more! Andy & Nancy have raised 3 wonderful daughters, Amber Bryant (husband Caleb), Carole, & Bonnie.

Over the course of time, Andy has served on local, national, and international mission trips, led a small group, Bible studies, served as a church Deacon, and was commander of the Awana ministry for many years. He's still known by many children and teenagers as "Commander Andy," and is an absolute skilled and knowledgeable workman both physically and spiritually.

Nancy has a similar passion for children, having served in Awana, VBS, and children's ministry, along with the recent addition of the "Mommy & Me" ministry in which she works with mom's of infants and preschoolers through teaching them Bible stories to share with their children. Nancy also is a special needs advocate, and recently taught a Bible study as well as a seminar on several "best practices" of how to teach and care for children with special needs. Nancy is spiritually fed in Women's Bible Study, which she's faithfully attended for many years.

Nancy and their daughter Bonnie also have a passion for worship ministry! Nancy plays guitar and piano in Sunday worship as well as our Seniors SALT ministry.

We could go on and on, but the point is... these are godly, imperfect people. They love Jesus. They love our church. We are so thankful for them!

Care Team Summer Update https://www.willowcreekchurch.org/drew-taylors-blog/post/care-team-update- https://www.willowcreekchurch.org/drew-taylors-blog/post/care-team-update-#comments Thu, 24 Jun 2021 11:00:00 -0400 https://www.willowcreekchurch.org/drew-taylors-blog/post/care-team-update- The Willow Creek Church "Care Team" is committed to prayerfully handling monies given to our Deacons Fund, with the purpose of those monies being to provide care for individuals, or to help support Christian organizations who are caring for those in our church family or in our larger community.

Each month, our Care Team of 7 individuals (Pastor Drew Taylor, Cheryl Aspesi, Marty Phillips, Mike Haas, Pat Kingsland, Lee Mackin, Jack Doing) gather to pray, discuss expressed needs, and come together to discern how we can serve as a blessing to others through the Deacons Fund.

Below are some "Facts and Figures" regarding some of the monies we've been blessed to bless others with. Remember, the Deacons Fund offering is collected throughout the year, by going to- www.willowcreekchurch.org/giving but is specifically highlighted during our Good Friday and Christmas Eve services.

2020: $93,000 was collected and distributed. 21 families received financial assistance, 2 families received regular transporation needs, 3 families receieved home repairs, 2 ministry partners were blessed with additional funds above normal giving, 5 individuals/couples received counseling, 20 families received regular meal assistance.

2021 (to date): In the same above categories, $14,000 has been collected and distributed.

Care Team Member Highlight: Pat Kingsland.

Pat moved with (now deceased) husband Dick to Florida in 1988 to buy a skid steer loader business "Bobcat of Orlando." Pat worked in the office but retired a few years later to care for Dick's mother. Together, the Kingsland's had 3 children, 8 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren with a 5th great-grandchild on the way. Dick passed away in 1999.

The Kingsland's had been searching for a church home following their move, and they noticed a church being built on E. Lake Drive. They attended and joined the church following the completion of our "chapel" building in 1992.

One of the many things Pat loves about Willow Creek Church is how the Deacons Fund Offering has been used to help those in need. She is honored to serve on the care team, and views this role as serving the Lord, as it is a pleasure to serve him by serving those in need. Whether it is in prayer, finance, or direction, Pat is willing and eager to help.

Pat says as she has served on the care team, she realizes how much she, as well as all of us, are in need of God's help. She's grateful that God has granted her love, compassion, discernment, and the ability to share how much she and others are loved by Jesus.

We LOVE the energy and enthusiasm of beloved Willow Creek Church members, David & Evelyn McCulloch! These two, along with their children, Haley, Karissa, & Damien, epitomize the culture of what our church desires to be.

The McCulloch's moved to central Florida after serving in China in ministry for several years. While here, David attended Reformed Theological Seminary and is now writing code for the ministry, CRU, while Evelyn is the Director of Educational Technology at i-Tech 4 Edu. David served as a student intern at WCC, and was instrumental in helping develop and update our church website.

David & Evelyn are heavily involved in the lives of our church members. First, they serve as small group leaders to a group of 15 individuals. David & Evelyn are comfortable sharing about their faith, along with helping facilitate good conversation with others. Second, the McCulloch's (and their girls) are involved in supporting Joe Lucero and our student ministry. Finally, they serve in the children's ministry with their son Damien, where Evelyn teaches children on a rotating basis.

More important than what these two do, is who these two are. They have recently celebrated 13 years of marriage, they live life full of joy, and most importantly, they love Jesus! We love you David, Evelyn, Haley, Karissa, & Damien! God bless you!

Have you worshiped at Willow Creek Church, and in the middle of the service, heard a hearty and robust AMEN!? That, more than likely, came from our beloved friend, Justin King.

Justin, along with mom Sheryl King, have been attending WCC for several years. They first got connected to the church through the ministry, RAPID (Reliable Advocacy for People with Intellectual Disabilities). Over the years, Justin and many friends from Seminole County have gathered in our church gym, classroom 607, and our cafe with the purposes of growing together in community and building productive relationships with individuals who have special needs.

Justin's passion for WCC is undeniable! He is ALWAYS early to our 10am worship service. He warmly welcomes our pastors and staff. He enjoys the treats from the cafe. He loves to dress up and wear colorful hats. He sings with great enthusiasm and often pantomimes playing the drums. AND, he yells his famous phrase "AMEN!"

Recently, Justin has been attending our men's monthly events. He has joined our Walking Tall Security Team, and plans to attend our upcoming men's retreat. A special shout-out and thank you to Andy & Nancy Pearson, Lee Mackin, Bill & Colleen Hufford, Vickie Andersen, Bryan Cannon, Mike Haas, and all others who make Justin feel so loved and special.

God bless this young man! We are thankful for him and all of our friends and members of Willow Creek Church!

Congregational Meeting Recap from 02/28/2021 https://www.willowcreekchurch.org/drew-taylors-blog/post/congregational-meeting-recap-from-02-28-2021 https://www.willowcreekchurch.org/drew-taylors-blog/post/congregational-meeting-recap-from-02-28-2021#comments Tue, 02 Mar 2021 08:00:00 -0500 https://www.willowcreekchurch.org/drew-taylors-blog/post/congregational-meeting-recap-from-02-28-2021 Congregational-Meeting

Every year, our church holds a congregational meeting. This is in accordance with our Book of Church Order (BCO), which states: Whenever it may seem for the best interests of the church that a congregational meeting should be held, the Session shall call such meeting and give public notice of at least one week. No business shall be transacted at such meeting except what is stated in the notice.

This year, we have already held 2 congregational meetings. There is a lot happening at Willow Creek Church, between the Covid pandemic, death of Jeff Smith, moving of Pastor Kevin Labby and family, among the top of the list, a lot of difficult things have transpired. However, a lot of great things have occurred in the past 12 months as well including... adding worship director Jeffrey Hoy, technical director Ryan Carter, nursery director Martha Buot, preschool director Ellen Geer, & facilities manager Brian Scholl to the staff.

Additionally, our student ministry has grown, our livestream video service has been improved, we added a morning prayer time on Facebook live, children and adults were baptized, over 30 individuals joined our church in membership, and we ended ahead of our budget due to the generosity of our members (just to name a few things!)

1st Thessalonians 5 says-  Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. We rejoice, in God's grace and mercy that has been demonstrated to our church this past year.

Here's what we covered in our latest congregational meeting:

1. Ruling Elder Dave Cross served as the meeting clerk, Teacher Elder Drew Taylor served as the meeting moderator.

2. After opening with prayer, we announced the following elders and deacons would serve their next 3 year term. (At WCC, for the health and well-being of our ruling elders, deacons, and women's ministry leaders... we have them serve 3 year terms. Each person can serve two, 3 year terms, then is asked to take at least a year off before potentially returning.) Serving 3 year terms beginning in 2021 include: Ruling Elder Dave Cross, Ruling Elder Ray Kirby, Ruling Elder Dwayne Williams, Deacon Pierre Bourque, Deacon Gregg Johnson, Deacon Andy Pearson, Deacon Rick Rienecker.

The congregation also also voted and approved Rob Elliott to be brought back on as a Deacon.

3. Budget update by Ruling Elder Scott Howard & Deacon Brian Sinn. A summary included: $42,000 was added to our reserves. We have now met our church goal of holding $250,000 in reserves. (One of the primary motivations in keeping this would be to meet our insurance deductible and the possibility of replacing multiple a/c units in the coming year.) Our mortgage debt has been reduced to under $5 million dollars!

Giving in 2020 exceeded our proposed budget by $12,000! Even with Covid, financial health was stable.

4. Pastoral Search Committee Update: Co-Chair & Ruling Elder Ryan Johnson shared that we have hired the consultant firm McGowan & Associates to help us in our pastoral search. This team is coming to Willow Creek Church the weekend of March 5-7 in order to observe, speak to, and advise many of our core members, elders, deacons, and staff. They will work with our pastoral search committee, to help educate and inspire them to do their very best in the work of finding the right man to lead this church. Please pray for our committee! Thank you so much for your care and support for our church. Praying for you! You are loved!

Pierre & Lisette Bourque are true "go-getters!" This family loves Jesus, loves Willow Creek Church, and loves our people. I am so proud of these two, in how they are committed to "Declaring & Demonstrating" the good news that Jesus is Lord!

Pierre serves as a Deacon at Willow Creek Church and loves connecting people. He (along with Lisette and many others) served as the head of our "Events Team" for several years, putting on church picnics and holiday events. He has also been a part of a small group and has several close friends both inside and outside of our church family. Pierre is currently sitting on our Pastoral Nominating Committee, prayerfully evaluating and helping process who will serve as our church's next Senior Pastor. Pierre is generous with his time, talent, and treasure, and that's most evidenced in his love for children, where he mentors and serves at Orlando County Academy (OCA) in Bithlo.

Lisette is one of two women who chair our Women's Ministry Leadership Team. Lisette works tirelessly with other women to come up with engaging events and opportunities for women to connect. Lisette also serves on our Pastoral Nominating Committee, and volunteers alongside Pierre at OCA. I am most proud of Lisette's committment to see women of Willow Creek Church not only get to know each other, but help cross generational lines so that younger and older women might learn from one another.

We are so thankful for the Bourque's committment and love for their Savior, Jesus Christ! We love you Pierre & Lisette, may God continue to bless you!

Sometimes, you are reminded that God has created individuals who have the hearts of a servant. Dave & Linda Koval are two great examples of those with a servants heart.

1st Corinthians 15:58 says- Be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.

The Koval's willingness to be steadfast in the midst of challenging circumstances, has been a huge blessing to the members and friends of Willow Creek Church. Dave has served in a variety of roles at Willow Creek Church. From repairing things around the church, to setting up for events, to ushering, and helping facilitate a small group... Dave is passionate and focused in his desire to help others.

Linda has a heart for people. Recently, Linda has served to be a support system to several of our most vulnerable ladies, women who are going through very difficult physical health issues. Linda also coordinates women gathering together, and she herself desires to grow and help others grow spiritually.

As one of the pastors to the Koval's, I find their lives to be a great evidence of their personal relationship with Jesus. Just as the above verse states, the Koval's are consistent, steadfast, and are ALWAYS abounding in the work of the Lord and his church. We are so thankful for the Koval's and we hope you connect with them, and remind them that they are loved!

Thank you Dave & Linda!
